Caltrans describes a shoulder-widening and roadway safety project on State Route 36 between Hill Lane near Hydesville and Wilson Lane in Carlotta. The work area covers highway postmiles 3.9 through 6 and is designed to make this rural road more forgiving for drivers.

The project includes wider shoulders, rumble strips, guardrail improvements, culvert replacements, extension of a westbound passing lane near Ward Creek, a new bridge and curve work. Caltrans lists fall 2026 as the expected completion period, but that estimate does not by itself confirm every construction item has been finished.

Residents driving SR-36 should check Caltrans road-condition updates for present-day lane restrictions, flagging or closure notices. Safety work may reduce long-term risk while still creating short-term traffic interruptions during construction.
